Outreach: "BEYOND PITY"
Conversations on Inclusion, Discrimination and Empowerment for Persons Living with Albinism
“Beyond Pity” Outreach
Albino Empowerment Foundation began 2026 with purpose, connection, and hope as we held our inaugural Outreach Meeting, originally scheduled for December 2025 and eventually held on Saturday, 3rd January 2026. What started as a small plan quickly grew into a powerful advocacy moment.
“Beyond Pity” is a heartfelt initiative by Albino Empowerment Foundation, created to uplift persons living with albinism, restore hope, and strengthen self-confidence as we step into a new year with courage stronger together.
Our initial goal was to support about six persons living with albinism in Lagos State. Through the generous partnership of CADEF, Consumer Advocacy and Development Empowerment Foundation, the outreach expanded to reach about fourteen persons living with albinism. This partnership reminded us that when organizations come together, impact multiplies.
The Albino Empowerment Foundation theme for the year, “Beyond Pity,” guided heartfelt conversations and honest storytelling. Participants spoke openly about the realities of living with albinism in Nigeria, working under harsh sunlight, struggling to access job opportunities, facing discrimination, mockery and misplaced pity and dealing with mental health challenges and marriage rejection rooted in ignorance. We also emphasized the importance of understanding our rights and standing confidently in them. These discussions reinforced the urgent need for awareness, empathy and inclusion in Nigeria as a people.
With a total attendance of twenty two people, the gathering was warm, engaging, and deeply empowering. It was a safe space where stories were shared, lessons were learned, and encouragement flowed freely. Mentorship moments and peer support helped remind us that we are not alone and that our voices matter.
As part of the outreach, relief items were shared to support daily living and sun protection. Beneficiaries received bags of rice, bucket hats, sun glasses, and umbrella hats. Although we received more entries than we could accommodate, beneficiaries were contacted based on available resources. Our commitment remains strong to reach even more persons living with albinism across Nigeria as we grow.
We were honoured to welcome respected partners and advocates, including Prof. Chiso Ndukwe-Okafor, Executive Director of CADEF and Chairman Albino Empowerment Foundation , Taiwo Tella-Ndukwe, Director of Operations at CADEF, Lovelyn Okafor Esq, Country Head of the Newmark Group Nigeria, Kobi Ikpo, Founder of Teenage Development for Africa, Pharm. Oluchi Chime Okafor, Program Coordinator of Albino Empowerment Foundation and Ifeoma Ngesina, Founder and Advocacy relations for Albino Empowerment Foundation.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Engr. Chidibere Nwoga and CADEF for their generosity and belief in this cause. Together, we are not just offering support, we are changing narratives, one step at a time.
AEF Albinism Support Group
One of the major highlights of 2025 was the launch of the AEF Albinism Support Group; an online community created by Albino Empowerment Foundation to provide a safe, inclusive and supportive space for persons living with albinism in Nigeria.
The support group was established to enable members to share lived experiences, access helpful resources, build self-confidence, and grow together through community, mentorship, and peer support. It also serves as a platform for empowerment, advocacy, and awareness, helping to address discrimination, social exclusion, and common myths surrounding albinism.
Persons living with albinism across Nigeria are warmly invited to join this growing family and become part of a community where their voices are heard and valued.

Mentorship and career guidance
Donations and relief items
Sun-protection tools such as sunscreen creams, sunglasses, hats, and protective clothing
Every form of support brings us closer to a society where persons living with albinism can live fully, confidently, and without limits.

The Heat that Burns Twice
“In Nigeria’s sun, what others call warmth feels like fire to us. Every step under daylight reminds us that even nature treats us differently. Still, we rise, we shine, even when the sun scorches”

Different, Not Less
Abey wanted to play football after school. But they laughed “You’re too Afin (too white) to be one of us.”
He walked home quietly, wondering why his skin decided his worth.
Over time, Abey bearly kept friends and now prefers staying indoors..
Beauty Misunderstood
Some call it a curse. Others stare like we’re magic.
But beyond the myths and whispers are hearts that dream, hands that build, and souls that feel , just like yours.
The Student who sat in front
She always sat in front of the class, not because she loved attention, but because she couldn’t see the board from afar.
Her grades? Top of the class.
Her vision? Far beyond sight.
But… the open class jokes are discouraging, wish she could school from home.
